Artist Statement

What kind of artist am I?

Well, to be entirely frank, I do not have a concrete answer to this question.

In my attempts to find my aesthetic and name what inspires my artistry most, I have realized that no single answer exists. The one through-line which has remained consistent is that versatility is the anchor which my dance practice revolves around. I am a versatile dancer, teacher, and choreographer who steps confidently into various professional roles and genres of dance. There is little consistency in what I do but how I do it is always with integrity, care, and an unwavering passion.

As a performer, I am driven by the ecstatic feeling of being onstage. Performing is the vessel through which I am fully seen and fully heard without needing to speak - nowhere else do I feel more alive.

As a choreographer, I create distinct, meaningful ways of expressing myself and the dancers I work with. My work is always crafted with close attention to detail, almost mathematical. I work intimately with music and rhythm, as well as spatial configuration and pathways. I intentionally cater my choreography to highlight my dancers strengths and personal desires, and for this reason, no two works are alike.

As an educator, I value the human being behind the dancer above all else. I believe that dance training is not just a means to improving performance, but a means to improving one’s existence. I am a feminist who seeks to empower young girls and women to find their voice through dance. I honor the rich perspectives of every one of my students and encourage them to be vocal, active participants in their learning.
